Whether you're writing a report for school or work, becoming proficient in report creation is a “must have" skill today. However, perhaps the biggest obstacle that prevents you from starting this process is knowing what to write, where to start and how to compile.
Is there a way you can come up with good report without understanding the subject? Absolutely, not. If you attempt to write a report on anything without sufficiently about the subject, you'll destroy credibility instantly. If you ruin your reputation, people's BS radar goes up every time you write new reports. So don't do it, just deliver quality reports every time.
So how do you overcome this? or should I say, how do you research it most efficiently so that you can write presentable work?
You could conduct a search on “YOUR SUBJECT forum". In fact, on the web, there are forums on just about anything from auto repairs to bankruptcy. In addition, resource such as Yahoo Answers also provides you with solutions.
You can compile them and research most frequent asked questions. Make an outline of everything you find and list what's most relevant to your report and optionally add appropriate graphics and annotations for the material.
Next you'll visit Open Office website and download Writer. After downloading Writer, you'll use the built-in PDF print feature and as soon as you import doc file into the Writer, your PDF becomes complete.
Keep your report short. Preferably less than 15 pages. It used to be that the volume spoke so much louder than the content and people wrote hundreds of pages of PDF documents. But time is changing now - your work will be appreciated if you can explain a concept in more simple explanation rather than attempting to inflate the content by merely increasing number of pages.
After your report is written, you can even turn the same product into an audio piece and multi media materials - possibilities are endless. Just make sure your report solves a problem that concerns enough people. That way, there will be a market for it.
