When You Are Ready to Submit For Publication

Before you even think of submitting your writing, proof, proof, and proof again. Agents want publications as close to perfect as possible. Be careful of your punctuation. Always use contractions, only put one space between sentences, All thoughts should be in italics while actual speaking is in quotation marks. Each speaker should have his or her own paragraph, even if it is only ione word, and finally use double spacing.

Short Stories should contain at least five hundred words. Mini Stories, one thousand to three thousands words. A Novel should contain between fifty to eighty thousand words, (approximately 320 pages, double spaced). Use white ink jet paper and make sure it is printed only on one side of the paper and that it is neat and clean. Use ten or twelve point type. Use Times New Roman or Courier Type. One and one half inch margins should be used all around. Don't forget to right justify your margins. The first page is your cover page. Type the Title and your name in the middle of the page. Word count is typed in the upper right hand corner. If your story is a Short Story, the title should be in quotation marks. If it is a novel, use italics. Start your page numbering as number one on the second page. Put this page number in the upper right hand corner. Place all these pages in a Manuscript box to be sent off.

When you send your work, include an introduction letter, Make sure to spell the Editor/Publisher's name right. Make sure to address them personally, do not send your work “To Whom it may Concern". This letter should be professional looking. Flawless English, clean white letter size paper, twelve point courier, and no more than one hundred words. Identify yourself and your story. State that your story is offered for publication. Let the publisher know if your story has been published before.

Here is an example of a cover letter:
