Article and essay writers and website developers, need to prepare articles and website content on all sorts of topics - quickly and efficiently. There are a wide range of software tools and rewriting services available, both online and offline. These consist of synonym replacement tools of various types - both automatic replacement tools and ones that provide look-up lists for each word. The individual - word by word - pick and choose - methods are probably the best but they are extremely time-consuming.

The rewriting consultant services are great but are very expensive. The methods using translations to a foreign language and back to English are haphazard. These translation methods are commonly used for various rewriting tools but the method used is seldom disclosed. Both the automatic replacement methods using synonyms and translation methods can be very disappointing and produce poor results.

The replacement words are often inappropriate and make no sense in the context of the sentence. A better way is needed. The usual approach to write an article or essay, or to write content for a website is to gather the source material from various websites, organize this under a series of headings and then to rewrite each section in your own words. Essentially this means taking the concepts and ideas of the source material, finding new words and expressions as replacements and inserting your own ideas, words and expressions. What are needed are more efficient, comprehensive and smarter substitution tools designed to make better and more reliable substitutions by ensuring the replacement words are appropriate. The tool should focus on the 5,000 to 10,000 most widely used words in English language. Such large numbers of words are needed to increase the substitution density. The aim should be to replace about half of the original words. These words should be carefully selected as appropriate for substitution. This means choosing words that can be consistently replaced without changing the meaning of the phrases and sentences, or creating garbage.

The process of using synonyms will never be perfect because many words in English are used in many different ways as nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, etc. Also many words have many different meanings in various contexts. However by carefully selecting the words to be included and their synonyms, the performance of the tools can be maximized. Oddly this will mean that many of the commonly used words will have to be omitted because these words have too many different meanings and uses. Many problems are caused by words that can be used as both nouns and verbs, with different meanings, for example: study, care, rate, mark, strike, plan, need, back, walk, rent, loan, award, fight, report, work. Changing these words will be unreliable because the software cannot detect whether to apply the - noun - or - verb - version. Software to do this will be too complicated and too slow. Other words have too many meanings and uses to be suitable, for example: treat, last, safe, secure, safe, clash, works, over, fit, able, market, scale, poor, well, fare, fair, part, flexible.

Changing these words will be hazardous and will often have meaningless results. Therefore these kinds of words should be omitted to ensure that about 75% of the words replaced using synonyms are suitable replacements. The process suggested here is not an automatic - dumb cheat - system where you expect the tool to magically produce a rewrite without any further editing. Rather the idea is to use the suggested substitutes as a way to focus your efforts on the parts of the text that can be put into your own words. Once the draft substitutions have been made by the tool, you then start the revision stage. This involves going through the text, and rewriting words and sections in your own words. You proceed by accepting or modifying the substitutes, adding new words and ideas, re-expressing various parts and reordering the words and sentences to suit. A properly designed synonym substitution tool is very useful and efficient way to do this editing.

You should not expect more than half to two-thirds of the substitutes to work immediately. Don't expect to use the tool as an automatic replacement tool, but rather use the tool as a way of making suggestions you can work on in putting the text into your own words. You will find that this is an easier and faster process than trying to rewrite the source material from scratch. Find a good online synonym replacement tool for your next drafting, writing or rewriting assignment. What is needed is a tool that includes large numbers of carefully selected, appropriate and reliable synonyms.
