As with many marketing strategies, people doubt that article marketing is going to be obsolete soon. Many people think the sky is falling due to many issues related to the practice of article syndication and distribution. The good news is, it can't be true.
If you look at the trend of many marketing technologies, they will get a lot of buzz when one or a group of early adopters claim that the new technology works like charm. Add to that the publicity it obtained from various printed and online media, including bloggers.
Quickly enough, people were raving it all over the place. But alas, soon they'll find out that was not as viable as it sounds. The dust settles down. People finally realize it was over-hyped. However the trend will keep up for people who come in later and think it is worth a try.
There will always be people who are eager to make it work and keep testing the new strategy. When more people succeed, the trend will go up a little and the natural growth starts to happen. This is called the technology lifecycle by Gartner.
Article marketing, in my opinion, is just another marketing technology. Marketing with articles may be old, but the syndication and distribution are here much later after the modern shape of Internet appeared in 1990s.
The hype is over, but those who are going to find how to do it right and be consistent about doing it will reap the benefits.
Article marketing is not a fad. Some people think it is because of different issues such as duplicate content. To that, I'll argue that duplicate content is just one of the many factors that search engine takes into account when determining the ranking of the page.
Search engines are not the only source of traffic. They will never be.
Moreover, article marketing is far beyond just posting your articles on article directories. That is a very limiting thought. You can be a guest blogger or write for professional publications in your industry with the power of articles and that certainly doesn't carry the duplicate content issue.
The next time you heard them talk bad things about article marketing, chances are they don't know what they talk about. They may have limited results but that is more because of their ignorance. People are doing it in every possible niches. There is no reason why you can't do it too.
