Will you be prepared to deliver your acceptance speech if chosen to be the recipient of the Pulitzer Prize in Writing or if you’re named Poet Laureate? Would you be comfortable during an interview, if you’re selected as one of the authors listed among the top 10 New York best sellers?
Think about that nominee who was announced as the winner of an Oscar, Emmy or Music Award. Amazingly, they stepped up to the podium and knew exactly what to say and who to thank. You’re probably thinking they already knew they won in advance, but on the other hand, they probably didn’t. Nevertheless they came “prepared" just in case!
When you envision the success of your writing career, there are many elements that would be a requirement for achieving that success. Focusing on your dedication to your craft, keep these questions in mind as you prepare for possible interviews or awards:
1. Why did you become a writer?
2. What is your platform?
3. What are your writing habits?
4. What is your secret for success?
5. Is there an author who inspired or influenced your writing career?
6. What is your favorite book and why?
7. Is there anyone you would like to thank?
8. Do you have any advice for novice writers?
9. What are your hobbies?
10. Do you have any upcoming projects in the works?
These questions literally invoke you to work from the end to the beginning. When I won my first writing competition, I honestly was not prepared for the sudden questions that came, surrounding my decision to become a writer. I know that I am passionate about writing and it gives me the freedom to create, as well as relax. But, the thought never occurred to me to have an “acceptance speech" prepared just in case! It’s clear that you already know why you write, but you probably never thought about the dynamics of your career if questioned about it.
These top ten award winning questions will give you the opportunity to evaluate your current pattern of operation, then focus on “preparation. " Successful habits beget successful writers. What will you say during “your" acceptance speech?
