If this is your first time hiring a ghostwriter, you might not be sure exactly how to work with him or her. It can be frustrating if you aren’t familiar with the industry, but you have to remember that most ghostwriters are used to working with first-time clients. However, here is some advice for working with a ghostwriter that will make the experience much more enjoyable.
Communicate With Your Ghostwriter This is the cornerstone for any positive business relationship, but it is especially true when it comes to a ghostwriter. If you are unable to commicate with your ghostwriter, it is doubtful that you will get what you want. Don’t ever be afraid to tell your ghostwriter exactly what you need, when you need it. If there is a certain style or voice in which you want your manuscript written, communicate those desires. Your ghostwriter might be intelligent and professional, but I can guarantee that he or she is not a mind reader.
Listen to Your Ghostwriter It can be difficult to take advice from someone who is a complete stranger, but you must be willing to listen to the advice that your ghostwriter imparts. Most ghostwriters – myself included – have been in the industry for several years and are arguably more familiar with the ins and outs of writing and publishing. Not only have you hired your ghostwriter to write your manuscript, but you have also solicited his or her expertise. So listen to what he or she says with an open mind.
Ask Your Ghostwriter Questions From experience, there is nothing more frustrating than coming to the end of a manuscript only to discover that my client wanted something different. Ask questions! If you don’t understand something, ask your ghostwriter to clarify. If you have misgivings about a particular section of your manuscript, ask the ghostwriter what he or she was attempting to get across. Often, misunderstandings are simply the result of poor communication. Don’t assume; ask.
Understand Your Ghostwriter No business relationship that starts out without a formal understanding of the terms will ever end up in a positive light. This means that you should understand your ghostwriter and he or she should understand you. So before you part with a deposit or sign a contract, get on the same page. Talk about deliverables, payment and promotion. Don’t just assume, as I’ve said before, because you could end up with something entirely different from what you imagined.
