For over 50 years the Outer Banks has been a vacation destination. In the last ten years the Outer Banks has experienced a boom in new construction. The homes built in the last ten to twenty years are offering many more amenities than was ever available in the traditional beach cottages.

Not too long ago central air conditioning was not even offered in beach cottages. Just making it to the beach to vacation was cause for celebration. After a hot day on the beach, the inside of the home did not feel so bad. In these simpler times the home's were as basic as possible. Many of the traditional cottages offered the only amenity that is truly needed, shelter from the elements.

Today's homes go way beyond what was traditionally offered. Today's vacationer wants a home with at least 10 TV's, an equal number of DVD players, pool, hot tub, and elevator. It is also nothing for some of today's more luxurious homes to offer a theater and rec room. Today's vacationers also want the home to provide sheets and towels.

The times are long gone where just spending a day on the beach and enjoying the company of those you are on vacation with was enough for a successful vacation. Unfortunately, now many of today's vacationers forget why they save up all year to go on vacation, to relax. If you end up being worried about whether or not 1 television or DVD player is not working instead of enjoying the simple pleasures of vacation, you will never be happy with what you pay for.

If you can take the time to laugh about anything that breaks or goes wrong on your vacation, you are long on your way to understanding why it's worthwhile to save up all year for an Outer Banks vacation .
