Situated in the Golden Triangle corridor the park is very popular in the circuit. The popularity has arrived not due to proximity to major sightseeing destinations like Jaipur and Agra but due to the tiger.

Yes Ranthambhore is a tiger heaven and besides it there many other mammals. At this tiger reserve you will find plenty of avian species to add to your tiger safaris. The route taken is Agra followed by drive to Jaipur and then a six hour drive to Sawai Madhopur. The park is about fifteen minutes drive from the township.

Open jeep safaris and canter excursions are organized but remember you need to take a permit before hand. If you are going to stay at hotel I am sure they will assist you in getting one. Jeep safaris are costly but you have greater control and can hire a naturalist to guide and interpret the behavior and morphology. He can also help identify birds of the park.

Canter safaris are cheaper and there is a guide to assist you so that you enjoy the ride. All these arrangement can be made by the hotel resort that you have chosen to stay. But please contact in advance if you are traveling independently. If you are part of a package tour all arrangements will be taken care of.

Usually three safaris are enough if your sole aim is to see the tiger. If you wish for a holistic experience you should go for at least six safaris – more the merrier.

At Ranthambore the possibility of tiger sightings is great but do not be disappointed if you miss out on one. Besides colorful birds there is plenty to see and enjoy. Leopard, sloth bear, crocodile, Nilgai, Sambar and other species of deer are fun to watch. A hyena or wolf is a rare appearance.
For birders it is a paradise, hire a good bird guide and explore you checklist will be full of exciting discoveries. Among the reptiles python, cobra and rat snake are seen but with luck. Nocturnal animals like fox, civet and porcupine can be seen on a night drive.

If you can afford it jeep safari is the best for excursions at Ranthambhore. It will give greater freedom to move around especially if you are a photographer with equipments. You can share the cost with a fellow photographer.
