Culture vultures may believe that they have to visit the major capital cities for their fix, but this is not strictly true. The British Overseas Territory of Bermuda is a great example of one of these lesser known cultural destinations. In addition to a magnificent natural beauty, there is also a rich history just waiting to be discovered in Bermuda. Accommodation in the centre will allow you to get out and explore each day before retiring to your room to reflect on everything that you have seen. Here is what you can look forward to on a cultural holiday to this island:

It should not come as too much of a surprise that there is a long history of creative talent here due to the island’s stunning natural beauty. The landscape has inspired countless artists across a wide range of mediums, and this art can be enjoyed in a handful of different places. The main hub for art is the Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art - here you can find over 1,500 pieces within the beautiful Botanical Gardens. Stroll through the gardens and you can enjoy pieces by names including Georgia O'Keefe, Winslow Homer and Andrew Wyeth.

There is a lively and vibrant music scene on the island that any music lover is sure to appreciate. It was once the jazz greats who came to the shores in the 1940s, but today you will find pop, rock, contemporary jazz, calypso and everything in between at the cool local venues. For the best gigs, head to the Hog Penny, The Pickled Onion and the Fairmont Southampton Princess as these are all local favourites that attract great talents.

Bermudans rejoice in a proud theatrical heritage which dates right back to Shakespeare’s The Tempest. The Bermuda Festival of the Performing Arts takes place between January and March each year and this brings a great deal of creativity and culture to the island from each corner of the globe. This is the main highlight, but the Musical and Dramatic Society also play a key role in the local community by staging a range of shows and concerts throughout the year. The Harvard Hasty Pudding theatre group, meanwhile, host a popular burlesque-style comedy each year which is not to be missed.

Where to Stay

Those wanting to explore the island’s cultural highlights will want a hotel that puts them in the heart of the action. There are a few places to consider, but perhaps the best Bermuda accommodation option for enjoying the culture is the spectacular Hamilton Princess & Beach Club overlooking the harbour. The recent renovations allow guests to enjoy fantastic facilities, a sophisticated atmosphere and even its own art collection containing works by Jeff Koons, Banksy, Andy Warhol and Ai Wei Wei. You are also perfectly placed to get out and explore the many cultural gems that are just waiting to be discovered.

This combination of a rich cultural history and amazing natural beauty make this a fantastic place for a rewarding holiday. You will need to select Bermuda accommodation that allows you to get the most out of your stay and the Hamilton Princess & Beach Club will certainly allow you to do this.
