The origin of the name is under much conjecture. An ancient Hindu sage preached here at the banks of River Narmada. His name was Jabali Rishi and hence the town was named as Jabalpur. For centuries the destination was ruled by the Gond Kings of tribal descent.

The Kulchuri dynasty ruled Jabalpur, this was much before the Gonds, and have left tell tale signatures on many ancient monuments found here. Madan Mahal Fort is one such example. This dynasty was also instrumental in creating the Khajuraho Temples in Central India.

The Mughals ruled nominally but fought wars with Gond Ruler Rani Durgawati who is much extolled in the annals of Indian history. She eventually gave her life at battlefield of Narrai near Jabalpur. Then arrived the Maratha rulers. The rule had a significant cultural impact on the agglomeration.

The British eventually vanquished the Marathas and ruled the township for a significant period. The destination was involved in mutiny of 1857 the Gond kings took active part but the rebellion was quelled. The British called the city Jubbulpore and it was made into a cantonment. Along with Sagar and Nurbada territories creation of Central Provinces and Berar took place. Placed in the heart of India with tropic of Capricorn pacing through it is also referred as Central India in contemporary times.

The British too left an impact on the culture of city. The game of snookers was invented here. Numerous churches, clubs, cantonment buildings, hospitals, schools and railway were the creation of the rulers. They were also instrumental in according a cosmopolitan character.

Jabalpur in real sense is a cosmopolitan town with significant population of people from various regions of India. The unique characteristics also gave rise to cultural ascendancy in form of music, fine arts and education.

The city is HQ of many public sector concerns. The High Court of MP is the hallmark seat of State Level Judiciary in India. With assemblage of satellite towns Jabalpur has become an important trading hub and private manufacturing is on the rise. Placed with proximity to tiger reserves and hill resort a large number of business and holiday visitors arrive here.

To cater to rising tourists business hotels in Jabalpur are fulfilling demand for accommodation. The city organises number of cultural events thus giving rise to its popularity in India. Winters are the best time to visit. The airport and rail connectivity besides highways are the best mean to reach.
