What To See in Downtown Perth

Visitors: 220

Scotland is beautiful from the inside and the outside. It boasts tremendous cities like Glasgow, and smaller marvels, like the central town of Perth. However, these two are much different. Nevertheless, Perth is a fun little city, and tourists will not be disappointed with their holiday…guaranteed. Walk the streets of this 800 years old town, and embrace a warm and welcoming culture in Perth.

It only takes a short drive from a Perth city centre hotel to reach the nearest airport, which stands in Dundee. Yet, why catch a plane to and from Perth when the railway is cheaper, more convenient and much more reliable. The stations are not far from numerous activities and attractions too, adding just a little more benefit to train travel.

The downtown area of Perth may not be overly large, but there are several important sites for sightseeing and exploring. For more information, check out the questions and answers below:

What are some of the more historical sites in Perth?
Perth is not unlike other Scottish towns and cities. There is a long history behind this town, and visitors can find a piece (or pieces) of it. The most historical site in the city would have to be St. John’s Kirk. This amazing structure stands at the eastern area of the inner city, and contains a huge array of medieval artifacts. The building itself is quite breathtaking. The original name of the town, St John’s Town, came about from this building. Another site which is not as old as St John’s Kirk, or daunting for that matter, but still carries a significant historical feature is the Fair Maid’s House. It is now a museum that was established by the RSGS, or Royal Scottish Geographical Society.

Are there any churches?
Yes, there are plenty of churches found in the city. As a matter of fact, the oldest and largest is St. John’s Kirk, which was aforementioned above. Another church of interest is the St Finian’s Church, found towards the northwestern region of downtown Perth. It is not the oldest church in town, but it still is quite pleasant to discover.

What type of museums operate in the city?
Several museums are found in the city centre of Perth. The main museum is aptly named Perth Museum. Naturally, the museums contain hundreds of collections and displays that highlight the intriguing history experienced by this town. Free admission for all visitors makes this the perfect spot for the family and travellers on a budget. The Black Watch Museum is another famous museum worthy of mention in Perth.

Any art galleries or cultural sites?
Yes, there are a number of galleries found throughout the city centre. One of these is found in the Perth Museum. Another is the gallery of JD Fergusson, who happens to be the most influential artist from this region of the United Kingdom. He was a colourist, and many of his greatest works are on display in the gallery. Admission is also free into the gallery.

What about modern attractions?
Despite the stereotype, Perth is not just for history buffs and cultural enthusiasts. Families with children can find plenty to do and see when visiting Perth downtown. One of the best modern attractions in the city centre is the Perth Leisure Pool. It is a great place to take the family, as the many pools located inside the park have different themes, rides and activities to keep everyone happy. Another attraction that is perfect for families is Noah’s Ark. It is a leisure centre that boasts a remarkable array of activities for the whole family, including a golf driving range, go-kart racing, bowling and art centres.
