Visitors: 189

Millions of travellers find their way to the city of Naples each year. It is a magnificent town that boasts a phenomenal range of sites and activities to keep just about every type of traveller entertained. A Naples city centre hotel can be found online quickly and easily, so tourists should book a room in advance.

The city is found along the Campania coastline, and was originally named Neapolis, after the Greek meaning of New City. Today, most people living in the city centre know is as Napoli, while Naples is used by the international community. The city is awash in history, culture and energetic entertainment, which all add to the amazing ambience that is Naples City Centre.

Naples contains many fascinating highlights throughout its downtown area. Regardless of where tourists come from or what they enjoy, there is something for every traveller in the centre of this marvellous city. First up when touring the city of Naples, travellers should head to the Piazza del Plebiscito. This famous city square is found in the southeastern part of the city centre, close to the port. It is home to a plethora of amazing sites, and remains quite busy throughout the day, everyday of the year. The San Carlos Opera Theatre is one of the attractions found on the northern edge of the square. Another site is the Royal Palace, which sits to the west of the piazza. Travellers can easily spend a few hours strolling through this area of downtown Naples.

Once the sites of the Piazza del Plebiscito are done, head to the northwest of the square, and there are several sites worth visiting in this area. The star-shaped castle, known as the Sant Elmo Castle, is perched atop a small hill, and is certainly worth an hour from any holiday to Naples. It was constructed in the 16th century by the Spanish, and was up until a century ago a famous jail for military and civilian convicts. Tourists can still visit the eerie dungeons that exist in the lower echelons of the castle. Next to the castle is the Museum of San Martino. It is definitely within walking distance from the castle for most travellers, and houses plenty of interesting information and displays about the history of Naples.

While visiting Naples, one destination that can’t be missed is the National Archaeological Museum. Several floors of ancient Roman relics and artifacts are on display in both English and Italian. As a matter of fact, the Naples Archaeological Museum has the largest ancient roman collection in the world…even larger than the archaeological museum in Rome. There are also wall paintings from the Pompeii excavation sites, and many other interesting displays for tourists to enjoy.

The churches of Naples’ city centre are in abundance. The main cathedral is the Duomo, which contains two majestic chapels and plenty of architectural splendors for tourists to explore. Give at least an hour to wonder the halls of this magnificent structure. The St Gennaro Treasury Museum is also found on site. Other churches of note include the Chiesa Santa Maria di Piedigrotta and the Chiesa Santa Maria Maggiore.

The city centre of Naples is home to many other famous sites. Public executions formerly occurred in the beautiful Piazza del Mercato, and the stunning Piazza del Gesu Nuovo is another public square that is worth exploring. Another great and interesting site is the Villa Floridiana, which boasts a beautiful garden and the Museum of Ceramics. Asian and European ceramics are on display here for all to see. Close to the water’s edge is the Castle dell’Ovo, or otherwise known as the Castle of the Egg.
