From magnificent past to a beleaguered present, that which is the tiger’s story in India. The animal roamed through the wilds of Asia and Siberia. But now the tiger exists in few pockets in small population. The largest population survives in India and hence most of the tiger tours take place here.
The Bengal tiger is spread out all over the country leaving some states in the West. The largest wild stock is in Sunderbans Tiger Reserve where as many as two hundred plus tigers may be surviving. But the density of the forest and swampy grounds make it impossible to track tthe carnivores for the tourists.
The estuary is a complex piece of land frequently inundated by the sea. Other places where the big cat survives are Dudwa, Pilibhit, Namdapha, Manas, and Kaziranga and so on. But for some reason or other tiger sightings are not very good. The same holds true for reserves in South India. The best places for tiger tours are Kanha, Pench, Bandhavgarh, Corbett and Ranthambhore. The first three are most popular and are based in Madhya Pradesh in Central India.
Also known as MP this heart of the country is densely forested at places most of which have been designated as protected areas. Another new destination for big cat safari in MP is Satpura National Park in Pachmarhi Biosphere Reserve. The tourism has begun here but not yet reached its peak. The infrastructure is still in stage of development though the Government is encouraging. Pachmarhi is one of the most unspoiled areas in India is an enchanting hill resort close to the preserve.
The reserves of MP are excellent birding destination which tourist are now realizing. Impressive numbers of avian species are met with during bird watching trips. Though most of the tourists come for wild life safaris few are there for birding as well.
Some of the hotels in Kanha preserve and Pench encourage bird watching by offering the affordable packages. Besides tiger tours MP is also famous for culture and sightseeing tours. For many affordable MP tourism packages are best for traveling and holidaying in Central India. The independent travelers have lot of arrangements to make before hand which is stressful.
