Visitors: 710

Helsinki is the largest city and standing capital of Finland – one of the most prosperous countries in the northern European region. The Helsinki Airport, which is also commonly known as Helsinki-Vantaa International Airport, is a massive facility that welcomes over 12 million people a year.

The airport was built over 50 years ago, just before the Summer Olympics in 1952. However, since then, the airport has become one of the largest in the Scandinavian region of Europe, and one of the largest in the continent. Each year, more than 85,000 passenger carriers fly into the airport at Helsinki.

There are three runways serving the airport, and the airport is the hub for more several major airlines, including Finnair, Finncomm Airlines, Blue 1, Air Finland and Norwegian Air Shuttle. There are plenty of airlines that also use the airport, but the above few are based at the facility. Helsinki Airport hotels are provided.

The facilities at Helsinki Airport are second to none in the nation of Finland. There are plenty of a la carte restaurants at the airport, and many quick-eat services available too. In addition to the restaurants at Helsinki Airport, the bars are comparatively entertaining, with several overlooking the runway at the airport.

The spa services at Helsinki Airport are second to none, and by far the most popular way for travel weary tourists to rejuvenate and revitalize the travelling spirit. The spa service offers 15 minute massages, or full-body scrubs that take several hours. There is a pool and spas found within the facility, and Finnish saunas can also be located at the spa centre.

The airport is similar to a small cultural city with the addition of its art and photography exhibitions within the airport. Visitors to the airport can literally spend more than an hour strolling through the halls of the terminal building, taking in the wonderful artistic displays that are showcased. In addition to the Finnish artistic masterpieces, the airport boasts a photography exhibition that shouldn’t be missed. It will take a couple of hours to fully appreciate the beauty of this exhibition, which provides the perfect time-killler for waiting passengers.

There is also a museum located close the airport. Day passes to the Helsinki Aviation Museum are available, allowing passengers to tour the building while waiting for flights to depart. It usually takes about 15 minutes to walk to the museum, but shuttle buses from the airport are also busy. More than 80 aircraft are on show at the Aviation Museum.

Patrons of the airport can spend some time getting their haircut at the terminal’s salon, plus receive beauty treatments. Walk ins are usually not taken, so its best if visitors make a booking.

Passengers of the airport in need of special attention will be greeted by airline and airport staff at the terminal, granted that patrons inform airlines of their requirements at the time of booking. The staff at the airport are extremely friendly, and reliable, especially when it comes to disabled passengers. Disabled parking, elevators, lifts, specially equipped walkways and restrooms are all designed to cater for special guests.

Once inside the departure zone of Helsinki Airport, children can find several play areas that should keep them busy while waiting for departure. These play areas are located around several gates, including Gate 16, 20 and 30. Inside most restrooms lay several baby changing facilities.

Finally, visitors looking for transportation at Helsinki Airport needn’t go passed car rental. There are a number of different companies offering car rental services from Helsinki Airport. However, visitors must present a valid license before hiring a car is legal. Therefore, it is good to know that other transportation options are available if needed.
