Honeymoon in Rome

Visitors: 132

So the wedding's over and now you want a place to snuggle up with your sweetie. What better place to pick for a honeymoon than Europe, or more specifically, Rome? True love flourishes among the ancient ruins, medieval streets, gorgeous piazzas (that's piazza, not pizza), and breathtaking sights in this city.

Escape the crowds with a quiet, leisurely walk down the tiny medieval lanes that lead off from the busier squares, particularly those in Piazza Navona. There are a scattering of small bars and restaurants around these areas for a quiet meal together.

For a panoramic view of Rome, take a short walk between the Spanish Steps and the Pincio and relax atop the short stretches of wall for a view of the city from above the rooftops. Visit the Aventine hill, which features two well-equipped parks with wonderful views of St. Peter's Basilica.

The flowers will be blooming on roof terraces and in parks throughout the city. Peddlers sell red roses in the restaurants and out on the streets in the evenings, although they may not last through the night. Flower stalls and markets sell a better quality of flowers, though. The Roseto, Rome's public rose garden, makes a beautiful location for summer evening strolls. There are options for food and drink as you wander among the roses and take in the views of the ruined Palatine. Entrance is free during the daytime.

The Ponte Sant'Angelo in front of Castel Sant'Angelo is a beautiful bridge to walk along, but is often lined with hawkers. Lovers may prefer to spend their time on the Ponte Sisto, which leads to Trastevere, or Tiber Island. In the summertime, small markets, music stages, bars, and food stalls can be found along the banks of the Tiber.

When in Rome, you should eat like a Roman. There are numerous quaint little trattorias around Rome that make the perfect getaway for a quiet and romantic meal. The prices are reasonable and it gives you the chance to mix with the locals and get the true Roman experience.

From July to August, musical evenings that cater to all preferences take place in various parks and gardens around Rome. This can vary as widely as listening to Verdi at the Baths of Caracalla or pop concerts on a tennis court. There are even free classical concerts that take place in the piazzas. There is generally something for everyone and events take place every night.
