Kilkenny’s Killer Activities

Visitors: 178

Located in the southeastern region of Ireland, the town of Kilkenny is more than just the capital of the province of Kilkenny. It is actually one of the most significant tourism centres for the nation of Ireland. The city sits upon the meandering River Nore, which actually splits Kilkenny into two important areas.

Thousands of tourists a year make their way to the city for its marvelous attractions. Kilkenny hotels are therefore found all over the city to accommodate the influx of tourists.

Getting into the town is relatively easy, although there isn’t an airport serving the city. Regardless, there are several international airports less than an hours drive from the city, including the Dublin International and the airport serving Waterford. Railway stations in Kilkenny link the town to the surrounding cities like Dublin.

For a closer look at the main activities in the town, simply read the following list below.

1. The parks surrounding and within the city of Kilkenny make for excellent places to rest and relax when holidaying in the town. There is no better parkland area than that embracing the Kilkenny Castle. However, several other parks in the city’s outer areas make for excellent alternatives to the castle area. Some of these parks include the Woodstock Gardens in the southern part of the city, and the beautiful Mount Juliet Estate.

2. Every year, Kilkenny plays host to concerts in the main stadium. If visitors are lucky enough to be in town during this time, visiting a concert is certainly a great way to spend some of the holiday.

3. Irish Whiskey is a big part of the drinking culture of Kilkenny and Ireland. In the city, Irish Whiskey taste testing events are held on a regular basis. In addition to tasting the beverage, visitors will get a deep insight into the history of whiskey in Kilkenny and Ireland.

4. Kilkenny is one of Ireland’s best craft centres. As a result, there are plenty of stores and shops offering some phenomenal craft items for sale. These stores can be found across the city, and if further information is required, simply check out the Kilkenny Craft Council of Ireland. It is also possible for visitors to actually see a craftsman at work.

5. The downtown centre of Kilkenny is one of the most stunning medieval centres in the world. There are dozens of worthwhile sites in the heart of the town, but visitors can usually see most of these in the one holiday, as the centre of town is so compact, that walking from end to end can literally be done in minutes. Some of the sites that tourists will see on their walking tour include Black Abbey and St. Canices Cathedral.

6. Sport is part and parcel of Kilkenny’s culture. Visitors will find plenty of hurling action in the city, including some professional games which are held at Nowlan Stadium. More than 30,000 people usually attend games, so follow the crowd on game day and visitors can’t go wrong.

7. Golf is another popular activity in the city. There is a golf course that is quite popular, known as the Kilkenny Golf Course. It is a members golf club, but there are other courses to play.

The town becomes quite busy when it hosts this event in the first week of June. Other festivals that are worthy of mention include the Rhythm and Roots Jazz Festival and the Kilkenny Arts Festival.
