How To Get Around in Seoul

Visitors: 176

First time visitors to the city may prefer to rely on taxis to take them around. However, this can get rather costly and the metro system is fairly straightforward. Public buses also run regularly throughout the day and night, while car hire is also available and can be arranged through many cheap Seoul hotels.

Quick and Convenient

Taxis
Travelling by taxi is a convenient option for single trip, especially for first time visitors to the city. Travellers can choose between regular silver taxis, deluxe black taxis, international or call taxis.

The beauty of opting for the deluxe taxi service is that many drivers offer a guided tour of the city in English and can be ordered by calling 3431-5100, whereas regular taxi drivers may speak little or no English. Going up to W2880 at night, regular taxi meters start at W2400 during the day. This is the fee for the first two kilometres, while every additional 144 metres is charged at W100.

The Metro
Providing links all over the city, the metro is by far the quickest and most convenient way to travel. Perhaps the best thing about traveling by metro is that there are no traffic jams and trains run to a tight schedule all through the day. However, passengers should note that the trains stop late at night, meaning that party people will need to find another way home from the club after dancing the night away.

Negotiating the metro system may seem difficult at first but it is actually very simple as clear maps are printed about ticket machines and in most guidebooks. Visitors can also ask their cheap Seoul hotel to provide them with a map of the metro system.

Each of the nine main lines consists of several different stations, meaning that all areas of the city are covered.

Car Hire
Visitors who want to enjoy the freedom of exploring the city at their leisure may want to opt for car hire in Seoul. However, the city’s frequent traffic jams can make driving a bit of a chore and this is only really a good option for those who will also be exploring the surrounding area. Having said that, there are a good number of internationally recognized companies to choose from and car hire can be secured by presented a small cover charge as well as an international driving license. There are companies located all around the city and many agencies can also make bookings.

Cheap and Cheerful

The Bus
There are four different kinds of buses that can be used to travel around Seoul, each of which runs on different routes. Travel by bus is very cheap as well as convenient as a large number of routes are available, with the yellow buses running on a circuit that covers most of the city’s main tourist attractions.

The cost of travel by bus is reduced even further bys purchasing a T-Money card. While bus fares are usually W1000, holders of these cards only have to pay W900. Buses usually provide a regular service between 05:30 and midnight, with some buses continuing until 02:00. Although bus signs are usually written in English, travellers should note that few bus drivers understand English.
