Glasgow Airport - Background Info

Visitors: 156

Glasgow has one of the most exciting histories in the British Isles, and has been the benchmark of Scottish modernity and development over the past few decades. It is home to some two and a half million people, which is the third largest population in the entire United Kingdom. It is also the biggest city in Scotland, and a grand destination for tourism.

Boasting plenty of historic sites, breathtaking structures, welcoming people and sporting rivalries to die for, Glasgow certainly has what it takes to be a leading tourist destination for the United Kingdom. With two airports, one being the Glasgow Airport, serving the city, tourists have a range of transportation options to choose from getting into Glasgow. Glasgow Airport hotels are available for tourists, but there is accommodation galore downtown also.

Below stretches some information about the airport that patrons ought to know…

History
The airport that serves Glasgow has been in operation since 1966. However, this is debated, as the district of Abbotsinch, which is where the airport is actually found today, was home to an airfield in 1932. However, it moved to its present location in 1966, where a terminal was built, and commercial flights were flown around Scotland and the United Kingdom. In the 1980’s, new management expanded the airport to include flights and destinations from all over Europe and the United Kingdom. Today, expansion projects continue, as do refurbishments of current facilities.

Location
The Glasgow Airport is situated not too far from the downtown area of Glasgow. It is found between the townships of Renfrew and Paisley, although the entire area is known as Renfrewshire. To get to the airport, visitors staying in Glasgow need only follow the M8 motorway, as the airport has an access road that links directly to this. Glasgow Airport is positioned in the southwestern part of Greater Glasgow.

Terminal
The terminal isn’t overly large, but still manages to cater for more than six million passengers throughout the course of a year. Although the numbers for last year were down about 10 percent from previous years, Glasgow Airport is still the second busiest airport in Scotland, and number eight overall on the United Kingdom list. There are three sections to the terminal of Glasgow Airport. One area is set aside for international travellers and flights, while the other two are designated domestic and budget airline services.

Airlines
Many different airlines, international, domestic and budget, fly into and out of Glasgow Airport on a daily basis. The site is a base for several reliable carriers, including Thomas Air, Logan Air, BMI Regional, EasyJet, and Thomas Cook Airlines. However, there are many national carriers that fly into the airport, such as British Airways, Royal KLM, Icelandair and Air Malta.

Destinations
Destinations connected to Glasgow Airport vary. Originally, flights only went to cities around the United Kingdom. Today, there are many dozens of destinations with routes to Glasgow. Some of the largest across the world include London Heathrow, Dublin, Paris Charles de Gaulle, Amsterdam, Philadephia and Orlando. Some of the destinations are also seasonal, particularly those within the Spanish Mediterranean islands region.

Transportation
Current transportation options are quite convenient, but the future of transportation at Glasgow Airport looks even better. Unfortunately, projected costs of a railway link ceased its operations last year, but the plan for a rail link between the inner city and Glasgow Airport is still on the cards for the future. Nevertheless, there are several convenient bus services that travel into downtown Glasgow for a cheap rate. In addition, car rental can be found in the arrivals sections of the airport terminal.
