The flagship airline of United Kingdom, which was established in 1974, is managed by the parent company - International Airlines Group. British Airways is headquartered in Waterside, which is located at Harmondsworth in England. It was formed after merging Northeast Airlines and Cambrian Airways in 1974. The next big merger of the airline came about in January 2011. On this occasion, the airline united with Iberia to form the International Airlines Group (IAG). The resulting group became the third largest airline in the world and the second biggest in Europe based on the strength of its annual proceeds.

Based on the fleet size and international destinations covered, the airline is considered to be the largest in UK. Its fleet mainly comprises aircraft from Boeing and the size is approximately 241. The carrier mainly operates from the London Heathrow airport, while the Gatwick airport is also central to its operations. In fact, the airline owns about 40 percent of the slots available at London Heathrow, thereby dominating the terminal in a way. Also, the airline takes off to approximately 169 destinations all over the world.

The company has numerous subsidiaries today, namely, OpenSkies, British Midland International, BA CityFlyer and British Airways World Cargo. BA CityFlyer operates between London and about 20 European destinations, whereas the OpenSkies facility, which connects Paris, Washington Dulles and New York’s JFK, was formed after the 2008 settlement of Open Skies between United States and Europe. Then there is the British Airways World Cargo, which is estimated to be the twelfth largest freight carrier in the world. Besides the large capacity, this cargo facility is known for its ability to handle unusual and premium units too.

The airline has pulled off many remarkable milestones during its tenure. The first supersonic air flight for passengers that took off from the London Heathrow airport for Bahrain was operated jointly by Air France and British Airways. Moreover, it was also the official air partner for the 2012 London Olympics. The carrier transported the famed Olympic flame from Athens International Airport to RNAS Culdrose in its ‘Firefly’ airbus. Notable bigwigs like David Beckham, Princess Anne and the Games chairman Lord Sebastian Cone were onboard this celebrated flight.

The airline, which has seen a horde of accomplishments across an extended time span, celebrated its 90th anniversary in 2009. The British Airways Heritage website, which is accessible at, was launched to commemorate this occasion. All historic milestones of the company have been cataloged on this website.

Thus, there are numerous momentous achievements and historic events that back the success of British Airways.
