American Airlines: a Successful Conglomeration of Several Airlines!

Visitors: 171

In the year 1934 the American Airways Company was renamed as American Airlines. It was headquartered at Texas. This was done under the guidance of C R Smith and along with Donald Douglas he worked to develop the DC-3. This enabled to run an airline profitably carrying passengers without carrying the US mail. The aircrafts were called flagships at that time.

This was the first airline company to build an airport in New York and thus was able to become a partner of an airport lounge at the LaGaurdia Airport. Its working became a model to other lounges in the later years. After the war American Export Airlines was acquired by this airline and flights to Europe were established. The formation of this American Overseas Airlines paved the way for connecting the two continents.

In the year 1950 AOA was taken over by Pan Am. Meanwhile another subsidiary was built and flights to Mexico were established under this banner, Líneas Aéreas Americanas de Mexico S. A. It was the second largest airline in the world at this time after Aeroflot. It was this airline that introduced the jet service between the two continents in the year 1959 using the Boeing 707. In the year 1962 electronic booking was pioneered by this airline. The largest base was built at the New York Airport by upgrading the terminal at Idlewild which is today known as JFK.

The growth process continued leading to the formation of long haul flights to Sydney and Auckland from New York and Honolulu. These flights flew via Nadi and American Samoa. The growth story did not stop here. The airline grew in the coming years experiencing some ups and downs along the way to form what it is today in the twenty first century. It had under its credit many firsts and one of the prominent one was to have the electronic booking.

In the year 1999 along with other airline companies it formed the airline alliance Oneworld. Qantas, British Airways, Canadian Airways and Cathay pacific were the other members. It had built Codeshare agreement with several airline companies. A few prominent ones among them are air Berlin, Iberia, LAN Airlines and many more.
