Travelling abroad is being a dream for the young and the old. People travel out of India for different reasons. It may be for work, business trips, or simply holiday. Work related travel is however, the most common reason. In order to travel to a different country, you require a visa. The visa is an endorsement on your passport that indicates you are allowed to enter, stay for a specific period of time or leave the country. Each country will have its own visa and hence you have to get the appropriate stamping to enter different countries. There are different types of visas’ such as the work visa, travel visa, dependent visa etc. Even in work visas there are many subtypes. If you are new to the concept and processes related to a visa, here are essential basics you should know.

• The first and foremost thing is that you should have a valid passport. If you do not have a valid passport then you should apply and get one before proceeding with the visa processing.

• Which country you are going to travel? This is the most basic question to be answered because you have to approach the immigration service serving that particular nation. For example, it can be the United States of America, UK, Singapore etc.

• Which type of visa you are going to apply? Answering this question will help you to fill out the related application form for that type of visa.

• You should be aware of the period within which you have to apply for a visa because this can vary depending on the type of visa. Some countries will limit the number of visas for a particular year. It is therefore essential that you keep track of the quota limit and also the last date within which you have to submit the completed form along with the necessary documents.

• It is essential that you submit all the necessary documents and proofs for the approval of your visa.

• Always make the appointment for your visa interview well in advance; this will avoid unwanted confusions in the last minute.

• In many cases, you will have to supply a written statement that explains the reason of your visit. You may also be required to furnish the address of the place you will be staying in the country you are travelling to, whether your visit is funded by any person, and details of funds required for your travel. These documents should be submitted along with the visa application. The documents will vary depending on the type of visa and you may have to provide some additional information during submission.

• Your period of stay should also be mentioned, when you submit the visa application.

• Make sure that you know all the details in your application, because you will be questioned by the visa officer during the visa interview based on what you have filled in your form. It is very essential that you prepare well for the visa interview.

• The visa officers will inform whether your visa will be processed further based on the interview. Later you may follow it up by checking the status of your visa online. When your visa is approved then you have to go and collect it from the location that has been mentioned. This option will be selected by you during the interview else there is also an option where they will mail it you (this might take some time). When they raise some query or extra documentation that is required, then you have to drop them at the passport office.
