Selous is Africa’s largest game reserve, it triples the size of the famous Serengeti National Park and doubles South Africa’s Kruger National Park. It is also the equivalent of twice the size of the country Belgium with a square kilometre total of forty five thousand.
Due to the large wildlife populations in Selous, it continues to be one the most satisfying game spotting parks in all of Africa. There are estimated to be around four thousand lion, one hundred thousand wildebeest and forty thousand hippo living in the park.
The reserve is also home and serves as a somewhat sanctuary for the endangered African wild dog. There are around one thousand three hundred of these dogs that stay on the move seeking fresh prey within the reserve.
The elephant population of the park suffered a great deal in the 1980’s, due to a rise in poaching for the ivory material that elephant tusks are made from, parks elephant population dropped from around one hundred thousand, to fifty thousand. Fortunately in 1988 the Tanzanian government stepped in an attempt to cease the poaching of these animals in fear that they would be extinct from the area by setting up the Selous Conservation Program, which received backing from many organisations. At present, the Selous elephant population stands at roughly seventy thousand, which is a major breakthrough from the poaching ordeals of thirty years ago.
The park is named after explorer, conservationist and big game hunter Fredrick Selous and became a world heritage site in 1982. The entry and exit of the park is controlled by the Tanzanian Game Department, and no permanent human habitation is allowed within the reserve.
There are many opportunities to see great scenery as well as wildlife in Selous. The Stiegler is a canyon that measures 100 metres wide and deep, and is a truly great sight to witness. There is also the Rufiji River which flows into the famous Indian Ocean.
