Among all types of toys, big stuffed animals are suitable for kids of all ages. As a matter of fact, big stuffed animals, also, make great gifts for adults since these may express different affections that include warmth, friendship, love and admiration.

It was centuries ago when real stuffed animals were believed to have existed. Though there was no documentation regarding this, painted images of these adorned the early Egyptian tombs. On the other hand, these were used to replace actual animals in religious ceremonies of other civilizations.

Stuffed animals, nowadays, come in the form of toys. The very first stuffed animals emerged in the 1830’s. Most of them were handmade, so they were not consistent, when it comes to quality. A majority was made from cloth and filled with straw. Sock puppets are perfect examples of these.

Stuffed animals that we are familiar with, are similar to the ones that were commercially produced by Steiff Company in Germany. They were made from a plush like material known as mohair. The production of these soft playthings began with soft elephant pincushions that turned into toys. This was followed by other animal designs, the most popular of which was the soft bear designed by Richard Steiff in 1902.

The creation of the Steiff stuffed bear coincided with the teddy bear designed by Morrist, a Jewish immigrant who lived in the USA. This was named after President Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt because of the admiral gesture shown towards a wounded bear cub in a well-publicized hunting trip.

The scene was drawn by a political cartoonist named Clifford Berryman, in the Evening Post. Initially, the bear was presented as the wild animal that it truly is. However, the bear was later transformed to a cute and cuddly cub. Mitchtom mass-produced the teddy bear with the help of Butler Brother’s Company. Then in the same year, he started his own business, the Ideal Novelty and Toy Company.

The stuffed toy bears of both Steiff and Mitchtom created a craze, with ladies and kids taking their teddy bears along with them whenever they went. This trend encouraged other toy manufacturers to create their own version of this stuffed toy. Other stuffed animals surfaced in the market and came in the form of wild beasts, birds, dinosaurs, pets and farm animals, to name a few.

The larger ones are more popular as they are favored as presents to kids. They were, also, given to ladies on the occasion of Valentine’s Day and as a birthday or anniversary gift. These gifts, always, bring a smile to whoever receives them.

Big stuffed animals may look realistic with their size and detailed designs but are cute, ultra soft and huggable. No kid and adult would resist touching them. Though most of the kids, at present, are occupied with their electronic gadgets, the appeal of big stuffed animals will, always, remain here to stay.
