A plush bear in different forms has been seen in most nurseries, playrooms and in the company of little children. Up to this day, it is still among the most common among all stuffed toys. The origin of a stuffed bear toy can be traced back to1880 when Richard Steiff thought of creating one with technology used in making upholstery. It was in 1902 when he succeeded in producing a soft bear with plush-like material.
During the same year in the US, Russian immigrant Morris Michtom made a stuffed toy bear based on an editorial cartoon series on the Washington Post by Clifford Berryman, a political cartoonist. It was named “Drawing the Line in Mississippi". This was inspired by a picture of President Theodore “Teddy" Roosevelt with a bear cub.
The photo was taken as he was having some time off while solving a dispute between Mississippi and Louisiana. Berryman interpreted the bear as a tame and adorable creature, the exact opposite of what it truly is. On the other hand, Mitchum created his version of a stuffed toy bear. With the permission from the president, he named his creation, teddy bear.
The appearance of both bears by Steiff and Mitchum were different, Steiff's stuffed bear looked like a real baby bear with a long nose and humped back. Mitchum's teddy bear resembled the wide-eyed character in Berryman's cartoon, with its sweet and innocent look. The appealing look of the plush bear brought about the craze of this stuffed toy in the US.
Because of its popularity, the demand became so strong, prompting Mitchum to ask the help Buttler Brothers, a wholesale firm, to find a manufacturer for this. In this respect, Ideal and Novelty Toy Company came to be the first manufacturer of the teddy bear. At a toy fair in Leizpig, a few months later, Steiff introduced his own toy bear to the public. Being aware of the craze in the US at that time, an American buyer invested in a large volume.
In the years that followed, this stuffed toy came in many kinds and colors. Besides Steiff and Ideal and Novelty Toy Company, a lot of companies surfaced in the market. Among American manufacturers, Gund managed to survive and till now, continues with production of plush bears. Germany toy manufacturers, being established in this category, did better in exporting their version of toy bears. They adapted the same name of teddy bear.
This stuffed toy continued to be popular. It became available in different kinds and colors. The most favored type came in the form of a jumbo teddy bear. The flexible arms of most models allow it to be more cuddly and huggable. Huge teddy bears, like those provided by Tabby Plush, are available in a wide assortment, 300 in all.
