Establishing Your Christmas Traditions - The Christmas Blessing Box

Christmas truly is the most wonderful time of the year. The sights, smells, and sounds work together to create an atmosphere of holiday cheer.

Creating special memories with family and friends is an important element in keeping this time of year sacred.

In our home, our tradition is not putting any presents under the tree until the kids go to bed on Christmas Eve. They have their own tree upstairs that usually finds three presents under it for a few weeks until Christmas Eve. They each have a present that they open right before going to bed. Then, my husband and I stay up all night wrapping gifts and placing them in perfect position under the family tree. If we do well, we might get a couple hours of sleep before the much dreaded alarm sounds. We then put on a pot of coffee, turn on Christmas music, and wait for the kids to come sleepy eyed down the stairs only to widen with surprise when they see the beautiful display of presents. I love this time of year! I love that it's all about family and friends we hold dear. It brings a sense of peace and purpose to the world that at times can feel cold and unloving.

For some, the holidays may not be such a joyous time of the year. Due to loss of a loved one, or some other type of tragedy, the holidays may be filled with pain and sorrow. They find themselves wishing this time of year would quickly pass so they can get through the next 11 months without the constant reminder of their suffering. In fact, studies have shown that the suicide rate is usually the highest during the holidays. It breaks my heart to know there are people that are alone and depressed during the happiest time of the season. I believe there is a way to turn their sorrow to joy, their pain to peace, and their loss to gain. By thinking back on the special memories of their loved one and reflecting on the goodness and joy they brought to their lives will help heal the brokenness that is felt. By writing their emotions and memories down, they can better find a sense of comfort and peace. A second way to help one deal with loss and pain during the holiday season is to turn their thoughts and hearts toward helping others, speaking life, and encouraging those around them. It not only helps them, but the lives of the many they come in contact with.

Another tradition we've started in our home is to reflect back on the blessings we received throughout the year and write a note of thankfulness and gratitude. Then, the following year, we get the previous year's notes out and reminisce about the treasured memories. It also helps us to not get so caught up in the materialness that Christmas can so easily become. Focusing on the true meaning of Christmas and the blessings of life are what this time of year is truly about.
