Evening Gowns and Body Types: What’s the Right Combination for Me?

Visitors: 347

If you’ve ever chosen an outfit specifically because you have a certain body type, you’re already familiar with some of the rules of shopping based on figure. Some people aim to cover up things they don’t like, but the real goal should be to draw attention to the things you do like. When choosing an evening gown for a formal dress event, the same rules apply.

Some body types, like the pear shaped body, can be dressed different ways depending on whether the woman considers the extra weight a flaw or an asset. Many women are proud of their filled-out behinds, while others would rather minimize their appearance. To flaunt a pear shaped body type, a form-fitting dress is best. To draw attention away from the problem area, choose a gown with a fitted top or a bottom that flares away from the hips.

A slender figure is another shape that can either be flaunted or fixed. It seems to be the current trend to show off slender figures as much as possible, but if your frame is also boyish, creating curves might be ideal. To show off your slenderness, choose a gown with accents at the waist, like a belt or wrap. This will make it easy to see how tiny your waist is. To create curves, choose a gown with accents at either the hips or bust.

The final body type that can either be played up or concealed is the busty figure. Either way, you’re going to need a dress with sufficient coverage and support for larger breasts. There are better ways to show off a busty figure than low necklines. A gorgeous necklace can draw attention to the area in a more subtle way. To distract the eyes from a busty figure, look for a gown with a lot of detail around the bottom hemline.

Next we have the petite figure. Dainty, girly dresses look great on petite bodies. If you aren’t into the feminine look, simply go for something short to show a little leg. This can create the appearance of length that isn’t really there. Another tip for petite girls is to choose a gown with an asymmetrical hemline. This also creates height. Generally, as long as you avoid gowns that are so full they overwhelm your figure, you’ll be fine.

The apple shaped body type is larger at the upper body and smaller at the lower body. Choosing a gown with a high waistline can help disguise any problem areas. Empire silhouettes can help attract attention to your waist, which is often one of the slimmest parts on an apple shaped body. If you have particularly nice legs, you can wear a shorter dress to show them off and detract attention from your upper body.

Finally, there’s the hourglass figure. This is what most women would like to have. When choosing an evening gown based on your body type, the goal is usually to balance the body and give the appearance of an hourglass figure. So, if you already have an hourglass figure, you don’t need to worry about anything! Try on dresses you like until you find the perfect one and you’re done.
