If you wonder how ‘creative’ the Creative guys can be when designing new models of MP3 players I think you should have a look at two of the models that have been acclaimed by the public. One of them is the Creative Zen Micro, probably less popular that the Apple iPod Mini but quite competitive due to its features.
Though it looks rather classical at first sight, it may be quite funky if you choose the right colour of the 10 electrifying ones available. If you prefer to keep a low profile, you may get the elegant black one, which lights up blue. As its name suggests, the size of the unit is quite small (2"x3.3"x0.7" WxHxD) and it weighs 3.8 oz. , including the battery.
The Creative Zen Micro can hold about 2,500 songs on its 5GB hard drive and the rechargeable Lithium ion battery offers up to twelve hours playback on a charge. You get an FM radio to listen and record with 32 preset stations. The built-in microphone allows you to record up to 10 hours.
The vertical touch pad makes navigation easy; you will find a lot of extra options such as: contacts, calendar, to do list, sleep and wake timers, a customizable menu and many more. The player offers high audio quality at 98db SNR while its high fidelity earphones provide dynamic bass response (unlike many similar models). You can choose from 8 EQ settings (acoustic, classical, pop, rock, jazz, disco, new age and vocal). The unit also gives you access to over two million songs through Zen supported services. It comes with USB 2.0 interfaces (cables included) and a belt clip. Once you have got used to its touchpad interface, the player is easy to handle and works flawlessly at very high audio quality.
Another nice Creative model is the Creative Zen Nano Plus MP3 player, again coming in 10 colours and 512 MB of flash memory to store up 250 tracks and 1GB of flash memory to store up to 500 tracks. The audio quality is perfect especially for WMA encoded tracks.
Although available in plastic case, it is durable and scratch resistant. The device is controlled by three responsive buttons and scroll wheel which makes it easy to handle with only one thumb. The user-friendly display allows reading in any of the 16 languages included and in any position.
The unit has six graphic equalizer settings, the custom one allowing manual configuration of a five-band filter circuit for tonal characteristics of the mid-frequencies. You can place tracks in memory in any way you like: singularly, in folders or as whole albums and you can play them either in order or randomly. Music is easy to transfer from the computer even via a low USB 1.1 Windows 98 computer for the device is recognized as a standard mass storage one.
The Creative Zen Nano Plus MP3 player is powered by an AAA battery which provides about 18 hours of playback time but you can use a rechargeable battery instead if you like.
