Wagons are a six-piece Australian country music band comprising of the charismatic frontman Henry Wagons, bassist Steve Hassett, drummer Mark Dawson, keyboardist Mattew Hassett and Si Francis who plays the washboard and drums.
Despite forming in 1999 and being in the business for 12 years, Melbourne-based Wagons have only stepped into the musical spotlight after the release of their fourth album in 2009, The Rise and Fall of Goodtown. The record received numerous industry accolades including iTunes Country Newcomer of ‘09, The Age EG Album Of The Year ‘09, Mess & Noise Album Of The Year ‘09, and was name on of FasterLouder’s Top 20 Albums Of Year. Lead vocalist, Henry Wagons was also named one of the Top 100 Influential Melbournians of 2009 by the(melbourne)magazine from The Age newspaper.
Primary songwriter Henry cites Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, Neil Young and Elvis Presely as his main influences, basing a lot of his music and lyrics on these country music legends, though interjected with lots of humour. In fact, Wagons shows are renowned for their light-hearted approach and Henry's vivacious onstage banter with the audience. An English teacher by trade, Henry also dabbles with television, featuring on ABC-TV's Sunday Arts program as a rock ‘n’ roll correspondent and as a frequent guest on SBS’ RockWiz.
After endless touring, music festival performances and garnering widespread publicity from the media for their fourth album, Wagons have finally secured their rightful place in the Australian country music scene, selling plenty of show tickets and countless of their CDs online. With their humourous performances filled with rugged, cantankerous country rock ballads, the band have earned legions of new fans, particularly amongst mainstream audiences.
And they don't seem to be going anywhere soon. Wagons have just returned from a huge American tour, including the world famous SXSW music festival and Canadian Music Fesitval on the back of their new and very well-received fifth album, Rumble Shake and Tumble. They will be kicking off their Australian tour at the end of May 2011, so for those who are looking to buy Australian country music and learn more about the genre, Wagons should be their first choice!
