Ever wondered how some people accomplish the incredible feats that they do? During the 1970's and early 80's there was a frenzy of experiments conducted on people who consistently out performed others (be it in business, sports the arts. . . ) to find out if their brains were different from most people's. What was discovered from these experiments changed the course of neuroscience.
Its not that the brains of peak performs are different but what is different is the way in which their brains operate. The brainwaves of peak performers are synchronized, otherwise known as having brainwave synchronicity, or whole brain integration.
What Is Brainwave Synchronicity?
As we know, our brain has two hemispheres and most of us are considered ‘left brained’ or ‘right brained’. One hemisphere or the other tends to dominate. If ‘left brained’ you will tend to be better at logical tasks, detail orientated tasks, maths; if ‘right brained’ your strengths are more likely to be artistic, emotional awareness, people skills. One is neither better than the other, just specialized in different ways. This is called brainwave lateralization. The brain is not working entirely as one synchronized unit, it is not integrated, its brainwaves are not in sync in both hemispheres, they are out of sync.
When a person's brainwaves are working laterally, it means that their brainwaves are also faster and in the case of the brain, faster is not better. The faster the brainwave, the more stressed, agitated, anxious a person tends to be (high beta brainwaves). On the other hand when a person is experiencing brainwave synchronicity, it causes their brainwaves to slow down and this is very good when it comes to enhanced performance. By slowing the brainwave down one enters the lower beta (focussed concentration, mental processing, performance), alpha (relaxation, a meditative state, creative, at ease, increased awareness), theta (entering the subconscious, dreaming, altered states, super learning/memory, inspiration), and delta state (deep healing, well being, intuition, inspiration). The slower the brainwave becomes the more wholly the brain is being integrated.
It is not known exactly why brainwave synchronicity occurs in some and not others (most of us). Certainly being engaged in an activity one truly enjoys is part of the equation, but not all of it. Most of us who are doing the things we are passionate about still do not experience the level of performance and achievement we would like, so how does one develop brainwave synchronicity, or in other words their ‘mind power'?
There is another group of individuals who are practiced at slowing down their brainwaves and achieving synchronicity - meditators. There is extensive research that consistently demonstrates that an accomplished meditator has a high level of brainwave synchronicity and although the reasons for meditating may not be for peak performance, the quality of the lives of those who do reflect a balanced equanimous mind. It is without doubt that the benefits of meditation boasts a long list, but it is not for everyone. Meditation however, is a serious, disciplined practice that requires patience, diligence and endurance to see results. So what other options are left for someone who would like to achieve whole brain integration?
A more recent method derived from the research of the 70's and 80's is brain entrainment. It might sound dubious, but it is a highly effective, easy and enjoyable method by which to achieve brainwave synchronicity. Consisting of listening to sound recordings (binaural beats) designed specifically for the purpose, its effects are long lasting once the brain has been entrained, or habituated to brainwave synchronicity. Brainwave entrainment recordings have been used for decades by those in the know, NASA, Fortune One Hundred Companies, Forex Traders, and many others. But it is only recently that brain entrainment (binaural beats) is entering the mainstream and enabling thousands to benefit from it.
