What to Do to Relieve Stress - The Secret

There are a lot of suggestions out there about what to do to relieve stress. Working out at the gym, jogging, listening to music, or even reading are pretty common examples and they certainly work in the short term. Unfortunately they don't work in the long term and rarely do they work at all for people who have high levels of stress. If you look at all of the suggestions I just listed you will notice that they all have a common element. This common element is the secret behind what to do to relieve stress permanently and effectively.

Simplicity. Notice that all of the above suggestions require you to do something that demands you pay attention to what you are doing. See, the answer isn't the jogging or the reading or any other activity; it is your attention to the moment. The secret to dealing with stress is to pay attention to what is happening right now.

Stress is ultimately caused by the mind and not the events in your life. Often we blame circumstances or other people for our stress but unfortunately this is not how stress works. If you want to know what to do to relieve stress then first you have to take responsibility for that stress.

For example, let's say that you missed your alarm clock and you knew that the next bus would get you to work 10 minutes late. The best thing you can do is make it to the next bus and just accept that you are going to be late; but instead you spend the entire time worrying about what people are going to think, what your boss might say, what might happen if you lose your job, etc. Is it being late that has stressed you out? No, it is the constant chattering in your mind that stressed you out.

Thinking about what might happen, what might not happen, going over conversations that only exist in your imagination and worrying about the outcome if the conversation happens, etc; this is the needless mental chatter that causes you stress. We get so used to hearing that chatter and paying attention to it that we often forget that there is something else. Behind all of your thoughts about what might be is the reality of what is. Paying attention to this moment is the secret to eliminating your stress and the needless thought that creates it. You don't need to jog or exercise, dealing with stress can be much simpler than that (the simpler the better). If you want to know what to do to relieve stress right now, all you have to do is breathe and focus on nothing but your breathing. This is the essence of meditation, the root of relaxation, and the path to peace.
