Most people who have financial challenges will never admit that they are poor. On the other hand, some middle class people I know will say, “I can't do such and such, I'm poor, and they laugh about it. " They are not really poor, but they may be living beyond their means. The truth is if a person has the mindset of ‘being poor’ and acts like a poor person long enough, they are going to end up truly being poor. You have to believe in your mind that you are rich and you will be, but what most people don't know is that this works in the opposite, too. Thinking you are poor and acting as though you are will keep you there, you cannot rise above what your mind has set in it because the mind is a powerful thing. It kind of falls into place with the saying “Fake it, till you make it. " This expression gets thrown around a lot and it doesn't mean tell everyone your rich and then go out and buy all the luxury items that make you look rich. This expression was really meant to convey the fact that if one were to choose to wake up each morning saying to themselves, “I am wealthy, " then they eventually will be.
Say you can or you can't, you are right either way. Have you ever heard anyone who had so much negative in their lives they believed that they were having a string of bad luck or even used the word ‘cursed'? You can snap yourself out of ‘bad luck’ by looking for the silver lining. Everything happens for a reason. Try this. Take ownership for where you are. Really think about your current circumstances. Maybe you are stuck in a dead end job or you are up to your ears in debt. Draw a line in the sand and say, “Everything I have said or done until now has placed me exactly where I stand. " Once you have owned up to every one of your failures (and successes) you can move on. If you are stuck dwelling on how much interest rate your credit card has or whatever is bogging you down, you will never be able to move on.
Just like poverty is a state of mind, wealth is also a state of mind. Do you think you can be wealthy? You can. You have to believe that you are wealthy before wealth can find you. Why are most people satisfied with their lives the way they are and don't even strive for greatness? It's failure. They don't want any part of it. Successful people know that failure is a part of success. People who avoid failure also avoid success. Have you avoided failure? Some people try and fail because they are too proud to ask for feedback. Sometimes a person is given feedback and they ignore it entirely. Millionaires are ordinary people who are willing to do extraordinary things. Have you ever met a millionaire? A friend of mine once asked a millionaire how they got to be such a big shot. He laughed and said, “The big shot is the little shot that just kept shooting. "
So what's the easiest way to change your mindset? I can tell you that it is really very simple. There are three things that you can do, right now, to change your mindset. First is to change your associations. You are the average of the five people you hang around the most. Change two of them and you'll leap ahead of the curve. Find someone who is where you want to be and take them to lunch. A horse never wins by a mile so surround yourself with runners. Second is to think in a positive light. This can be hard at first, but there is a great exercise you can do that will remind you to think positively. Find a big rubber band and put it around your wrist, like a bracelet. Whenever you find yourself with a negative thought or comment, pop yourself with it. Your thinking will change dramatically, trust me. The last thing you can do is to make up at least five affirmations that you repeat to yourself twice daily. Affirmations is a whole new topic that I will touch on soon, but for now, think of five things to say that you want to believe about yourself. Some examples are: I am wealthy, I am slender, I am patient, etc. After all, it is all a mindset.
