It does not matter how young or old you are, or what your current circumstances may be - you, like everyone else, look ahead to your future. Whether you do this on a consistent, regular basis, or whether it is a rarity for you, you know that how your life will be years or decades down the line is important to you.
If you are like many people, you may have been viewing your future in an apprehensive manner. You may even have hesitated in making any concrete plans or setting goals because you may not be sure of your ability to “get there" - you may not have faith in your ability to do what it takes to actively pursue your dreams.
Goal-setting is the first step in attaining what you want in life; but the fact is that your chance of getting to where you wish to go in the future is largely determined by what you do today.
One of the most important factors in reaching your goals and having the kind of future which you will be the most happy with is to gain the degree of self-confidence which you will need in order to set your goals. When you know that your goals are reasonable, and that you do have the potential within yourself to attain them, you will be much more likely to make a plan and stick to it than the less fortunate who do not have the needed confidence in themselves.
How do you gain self-confidence? The best way to begin is by assessing your own personal strengths. Although being honest about your weak points is necessary in order to set reasonable goals, placing your primary focus on what you do have and what you can do will go a long way in helping you to build the confidence you need to become successful and happy.
One block to self-confidence is that many people were told, as children, that they should not boast about themselves and their accomplishments. In many cases this leads to a lower sense of self-confidence, and can continue throughout adult life. You can, however, develop a much better sense of self-confidence, the acknowledgment of your personal strengths, and an appreciation for your accomplishments, even if these are all relatively new concepts to you!
After you have begun to focus on the positives, positive results will show themselves. You will have a much keener sense of awareness of your natural strengths and abilities, as well as starting to see which ones you need to work on. Being the best You that you can be is the most important thing you can do for your future success. When you begun to focus on your assets, and develop them to their fullest capacity, goal-setting will be easier and more pleasant. You will not only have your goals for your future clearly in mind - you will know that you do indeed have the potential to get there!
