One main goal of home organization is to get rid of clutter. The best way to tackle clutter is to start with one room and go through every nook and cranny taking everything out and sorting through it. If you have a large house or an extremely cluttered house, that may seem impossible. So much so that you don't even try. Don't let that keep you from organizing your home. Here are a few simple steps you can take to see some quick results.
Most of the clutter we see is on horizontal surfaces. Counter tops, tables, nightstands, dressers, and the like all become subject to clutter. Clearing these surfaces can make a huge difference in the appearance of your home and the way you feel. Start with one surface. Set a timer for 10 minutes or however long you have, and start clearing things away. You will be amazed at how much you can do with even ten minutes when you are completely focused on the task at hand.
Another idea to try is a walk through. Take just a few minutes to walk through your home with a garbage bag, gathering every useless item you can. This could be done at night before bedtime. Scan your home thoroughly but quickly. Grab things like old receipts, loose gem clips, things that are broken or beyond repair, small soap slivers, empty lotion bottles, etc. . . You can even make this a family affair and give each family member a designated area to scan for clutter.
Clutter can be a thief that sneaks in without you even knowing it. It steals space (counter, closet, storage) and it can even steal your peace of mind by creating a stressful atmosphere. Clutter needs to be dealt with. These two simple steps can be ways to quickly clear away clutter.
