So is there anything wrong with being rich?
It could seem that way at first glance. We often hear people - very good people - warning us away from wealth. We hear terms like “filthy rich, " which can give the idea that money is dirty.
Even the Christian Bible superficially seems to be against riches. “The love of money is the root of all evil, " it says. And we're told in another place that “It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God. " If there weren't other ways to interpret those words, it would seem like the Holy Word is warning us off.
But don't forget that these same scriptures encourage us to be good stewards of the talents we have been given. We should never “hide them under a bushel" and let them go to waste.
So when you hear anybody warning against the evils of wealth, the first thing we should do is check how much experience they have with the subject. If they've never had much money, then they're in no position to offer advice.
On the other side of the argument, look how much good can be done when we do have money.
Mother Teresa was known the world over for her charitable work among the poor of Calcutta. She distributed food and medicines to the homeless and destitute, and the work was hers, but paying for all that - well, the money sure wasn't hers. It came from people who had enough to give away. In other words, wealthy people.
Without the wealthy, Mother Teresa would have accomplished nothing for the poor. She would have been just another penniless old lady with big dreams and nothing to show for them. The same is true of any charitable effort. The donations always come from people who. . . donate.
So if you wish to build great wealth, don't hesitate for a moment. With that wealth, you'll be able to do far more good in this world than you ever will without it.
