We live in a world of constant and accelerating change. You need to be continually developing and adapting to just keep you head above water, to be successful you need to keep up with change. One consequence of the accelerating pace of change is that it is very easy to feel out of control, frustrated and ultimately demotivated. You need to regain control over your own life and your success. Goals are an essential tool to enable you to do this.

Change is happening in the world around us at an ever increasing pace. The sum total of recorded human knowledge is estimated to be doubling every 2-3 years. That’s an enormous amount of new information becoming available every hour of every day.

Technology is developing at an incredible pace. New tools that speed up the process of communication, creation and spreading of new ideas are appearing every day, each one faster, more powerful and better connected than the last. Ordinary day to day objects are being replaced with smarter and far more powerful tools.

Modern technology has connected the whole world and there is increasing opportunity and competition coming from all corners of the globe.

As an individual you have to cope with this rapid pace of change. Many people find that they are reacting to change – leaving it too late to make changes and becoming the victim of change. If you are in this position, you are likely to find it a very stressful experience, you will feel out of control, confronted by a bewildering mass of changes, not knowing where to go next.

As a human being, you are not comfortable being out of control, and you will probably try to retreat to a comfort zone – only to find that the ground rules have change and you can no longer stay there!

Goals can help you take control of change

Goals are a very powerful personal growth tool that can give you the ability to direct your own life. Goals are even more important in a fast changing world because they can help you in a lot of ways.

Goals can give the ability to be in control of your life – you are no longer the victim of change if you are the one initiating the changes that you need to reach your goals. When you are in control of your destiny, you will find that you are motivated, energized and enthused to work towards your goals.

Goals are the link between your day to day life in the world around you and your life purpose – the dreams that you want to fulfill to feel that you have lived a full, purposeful and satisfying life. Your goals should all contribute to moving towards this purpose, they will give you the sense of satisfaction from achieving your life goals.

Once you have a set of goals, you can start to make sense of the changing world around you. There are too many changes for any one individual to keep up with them all in their lifetime. When you have clear goals, you can be selective about the changes that you make. You only need to make changes in the areas that are important to your life. Your goals will all be focussed on the important areas in your life.

Goals are an important tool for making decisions. As the pace of change increases, you are faced with an ever increasing number of life changing decisions. When you have clear goals, you can work out whether something is going to move you towards or away from your goals.

Finally goals are markers, lines drawn in the sand, which you can use to measure your progress. Knowing that you are making progress in the direction that you want to go in will heighten your sense of control.

You live in a world of ever accelerating change where you are faced with an ever increasing number of decisions that will have an impact on your life. For continued success and personal growth a clear set of goals is a remedy for the uncertainty and stress that can be caused by the pace of change.
