Many times parents think that they may be making too big a deal out of behaviors their teen is exhibiting or that this is just adolescent behavior. But if the worry continues it is probably time to take a deeper look. Talking to someone outside the family may be necessary to get an unbiased assessment of what might be happening. A trusted friend, a parent that may have been through a similar situation, a pastor or a counselor would be good resources.
The feeling of being powerless or out of control of the family could be another warning sign for a parent to take action. The child could be defiant and neither parent can make a difference in the family situation and again, this is time to do something different.
If a problem of substance abuse is evident, studies show that intervening at an early age will increase the success rate plus it will alleviate stress and reduce financial outlays for the parents and probably save a life.
A good question to ask yourself is"Is what I am doing working?" and if the answer is “no" then take a stand as an advocate for your child and take action that supports success for the entire family.
