My eternal gratitude to the unknown author of this version of Psalm 23. The television has surely taken away our vision. Isn’t it ironic that one of America’s most popular shows is American Idol? God’s Word has much to say about idols:
2 Kings 17:15: “They followed worthless idols and themselves became worthless. " Is.44:9: “All who make idols are nothing, and the things they treasure are worthless. " Jer.2:11 TLB: “. . . My people have given up their glorious God for silly idols!" Jer.7:8-10 TLB: “You think that because the Temple is here, you will never suffer? Don't fool yourselves! Do you really think you can steal, murder, commit adultery, lie, and worship Baal (or our modern idols!) and all of those new gods of yours, and then come here and stand before me in my Temple and chant, ‘We are saved!’-only to go right back to all these evil things again?" Eze.8:17 TLB: “Is it nothing to the people of Judah that they commit these terrible sins, leading the whole nation into idolatry, thumbing their noses at me and arousing my fury against them?" Eze.20:15 TLB: “But I swore to them in the wilderness that I would not bring them into the land I had given them. . .because they laughed at my laws, ignored my wishes, and violated my Sabbaths-their hearts were with their idols!" Hos.4:17: “Ephraim is joined to idols; leave him alone!" Hos.9:10: “. . . They consecrated themselves to that shameful idol and became as vile as the thing they loved. " Jonah 2:8: “Those who cling to worthless idols forfeit the grace that could be theirs. "
The TV is my shepherd,
My spiritual growth shall want;
It makes me to sit down and do nothing
for His Name’s sake.
It requires all my spare time;
It keeps me from doing my Christian duty.
It produces so many good shows that I must see;
It restores my knowledge of the world.
It keeps me from the study of God’s Word.
It leads me in the path of failing to attend worship
and doing nothing for the kingdom of God.
Yea, though I live to be a hundred years old
I shall view my TV as long as it works.
It seems to be my closest companion;
Its sounds and pictures they comfort me.
It provides entertainment for me and keeps me from
doing important things with my family.
It fills my head with ideas which differ from God’s will.
Surely, because of all the wasted hours
there will be a lack of rewards at the Bema;
Yet, because of His goodness and mercy,
I shall dwell in the house of the LORD forever.
