In their desire to be rich in this world too many Christians are neglecting preparation for the coming kingdom. Jesus taught his disciples “Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rut doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal. But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal; for where your treasure is, there will there will your heart be also”. Matt. 6:19-21.
Your first desire should be to please God with all that you do. Your focus should not be on making money to the exclusion of doing God’s will for your life. “. . Ye cannot serve God and money”. Matt. 6: 24. A Christian’s service should be to God first.
Doing what God leads you to, through His Word and by His Holy Spirit, is laying up treasure in heaven. The emphasis of your life should be as an obedient servant to God. Being a usable vessel that God can use.
In Ephesians chapter two you are told “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them”. Good works will be your treasure in the coming kingdom of the Lord Jesus Christ.
“And it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment”. Heb. 9:27. The works you do or don’t do will be judged by Jesus at the judgment seat. I Corinthians chapter three, gives you the guidelines for building on the foundation of your salvation. It is your responsibility to do the building. The truth is you are building everyday, everything you do is being written down and you will account for it in that day.
God, in His great grace and mercy, has equipped you for good works. He has given you His only begotten son, Jesus, so you might have life eternal. He has given you His Holy Spirit to dwell within you, to lead you to all truth and be your strength and comforter. He has given you His Word so that you will know what is pleasing to Him and what you should avoid. He has told you what is good works and what is not.
Jesus said “Behold I come quickly and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be”. What will be your reward? There are five crowns promised to the faithful, will you gain them all? God established rewards and you should understand it is up to you to acquire them. Salvation is free through the precious blood of Jesus. Your rewards must be earned.
Riches here on earth are important to allow you to do good works for others. Get wisdom and understanding about how much more important it is for you to be rich, in heavenly treasures, in the coming kingdom.
