Congratulations on the decision to tie the knot. Marriage is a wonderful thing. Planning the wedding though, can be one of the most stressful times of your life. This is why wedding planners have become so popular. It is easier to let someone else do all of the work, but they come at a price. Usually a very hefty one at that. Why pay all that money when you can just as easily do it yourself, IF you know what to do and more importantly, what not to do. The very first thing you should do is sit down and get a plan together, if you want things to go smoothly. Here's what you need to do.
First, before you do anything else, come up with a budget. How much do you want to spend? Do you want a formal wedding or informal? These are really important decisions that will effect every aspect of your wedding.
The next important steps are to set a date, decide how big the wedding is going to be, select where you want the wedding to be and who you want to provide the ceremony. Get these booked now. This is an important step because you don't want to tell everyone a certain date and then have to change it because someone else booked the church. You also want to be sure the location you choose will accomodate all of your guests. While you are doing this is also a good time to write down everyone you want to invite. Start now because your list will grow dramatically over the next few weeks and you need an exact amount when ordering invitations.
Now that all of that is done, decide who is going to be in your wedding party. First, you'll need a maid of honor, bridesmaids, best man, and groomsmen. Then decide on the flower girl, ringbearer, and ushers.
Once the wedding party has been established, it is time to delegate. Believe it or not, certain people have certain"jobs" in a wedding. This takes stress off of the bride and her mother. Find out who is supposed to do what. You also need to determine how many will be attending the wedding at this point.
Now it is time to choose the dress. The brides mother traditionally helps with this. The mother of the bride should also choose her dress pretty soon afterwards. The mothers of the bride and groom need to coordinate their attire, not match. A good idea would be them go together. The bridesmaids dresses need to picked out as well. Do this ASAP, because the groomsmen have to coordinate their attire accordingly. Once everything is picked out, its time to get everyone fitted. The wedding party should pay for their own attire.
At this point you have completed the following: set a date, booked a location, selected attire, and delegated jobs. Now you need to focus on the wedding itself. Decide where the reception will be held. Will it be at the same location? What will you eat? Who will prepare the food? Delegate, Delegate, Delegate!!These are things that people will usually be glad to help with. It is important to know this before you order your invitations because some food may be expensive or charged on a per plate basis and you will need to include a section on your invitation for RSVP and the # that will be attending. his is obviously important so you know how much food to have. The grooms family should be responsible for the rehearsal dinner, so you won't have to worry about that.
Ordering the invitations should come next. Many people choose to only place an ad in the paper or such, that is totally up to you. If you are going order invitations though, now is the time to do it. Order a few extra just in case. You also need to choose your wedding cake and order it as well. Now that all of that is taken care of You need to focus on the colors, equipment, music and everything else you may want. The brides mother should make sure this happens. She can also seek help from the maid of honor. That is what they are there for. Also the bride and groom need to go apply for the marriage license. This is surely a step you do not want to forget.
I hope you are now able to get a good start on your wedding. You , at the very least, now know what needs to be done. You will have many questions and concerns along the way, but help will always be available to you, so just relax and take a deep breath. Everything will work out fine.
