Zoo Weddings Offer Guests A Wild Time

A zoo wedding celebration? Why not?

Hosting a bridal event at the city's zoological garden gives guests a whole range of unexpected thrills by providing a distinctly original setting in which to celebrate.

And if you're an animal lover, rest assured zoos benefit from the extra attention and fees. A recent search on Yahoo discovered zoos available around the world that are ready to host and in some cases cater special events as a way to augment their operating budgets. Some zoo gardens have even established meeting and banquet facilities for just those occasions.

Zoos offer an unexpected choice

Zoos often open up whole sections of their grounds to wedding celebrations, allowing new couples to give their guests a privileged foray into an otherwise public location. Some will set up receptions facilities inside their exhibits, so that the party takes place literally “among the animals. " For example, the Memphis Zoo allows wedding planners to stage a reception in the Northwest Passage exhibit, which includes polar bears and seals swimming through huge aquarium tanks on each side of the room.

As another example, guests to the Rainforest Room at the Melbourne Zoo in Australia browse a giant aviary while they celebrate, and can stroll along the specially-constructed venue's expansive Japanese gardens.

In most cases, wedding couples can have their picture taken within zoo exhibits or beside elaborate zoo attractions, including aviaries, butterfly houses, with elephants or other docile animals, and more. Of course, availability depends on the actual zoo and its regulations.

Guests hold their celebrations in specific areas.

Most zoos will restrict their special events staging areas to specific parts of the zoo designed to accommodate large groups of people. Typically, this could be a specially designated area within the zoo grounds (such as the main concourse near the zoo entrance) or private meeting areas.

In many cases, zoos are only available after closing time or near the end of the zoo's normal operating day. Catering is also a matter of the individual zoo. Private caterers should be contacted and should consult with the zoo special events coordinator so that installation and setup are efficiently conducted.

Finally, couples seeking to host a reception or other wedding event within zoo grounds should make arrangements and probably even a deposit well in advance of their staging date. Times and availability are limited, so as with all reception venues reservations should be finalized as early as realistically possible.
