Choosing a Wedding Planner

You are planning a big wedding and want to be sure everything goes as well as possible. You also want to reduce the stress that is part and parcel of planning any wedding ceremony and reception. So you want to be sure you choose your wedding planner carefully. Do not hire the first one you call. Here are some tips to help you choose.

The first thing to do is talk to people you know who have used a wedding planner like your maid of honor or even the best man. They may be able to recommend a good one for you. Even someone who has not used a wedding coordinator might know of someone that might suit you. Call and make appointments with several wedding planners. Make a list of questions to ask. You will want to know what services the wedding planner will provide and what fees he or she might be asking for.

During your appointments, you can gauge how well you might be able to work with each one. You want to be sure you will have a good working relationship since you will be spending a lot of time with this person. Some of the questions you want to ask yourself are the following.

Do you feel at ease talking with this person?

Does he or she listen to your ideas or does he or she try to take control?

Is the person creative enough to flesh out basic ideas of yours and suggest a different option you might consider?

Once you have made your decision and chosen your wedding planner, you will want to schedule a meeting with him or her. Be sure to include your groom in the meeting. The planner can work best with input from both of you. A good planner will want to plan a ceremony and wedding reception that fits your style and the tastes and your groom's, too. The next meeting could include the bridesmaids and the groomsmen. That will help the planner to get an idea of what is involved with the wedding party.

Subsequent meetings can be scheduled weekly to go over what has been accomplished and what is still being worked on. This will give you a chance to make any changes you might want too. When you are looking for your wedding gown, meetings can be more often. The planner can schedule appointments to look at dresses and once one is chosen, schedule the fittings. He or she can also coordinate the choosing of the bridesmaid gowns and schedule the fitting for them, too.

Finally, using a wedding planner can make planning your wedding ceremony and reception a joy when you have the right coordinator. Just remember, it is your wedding and it must be what you want it to be. The purpose of the wedding planner is to let you make the decisions and the planner do the leg work, leaving you with less stress and more time to enjoy your big day.
