Probably the best way to start to learn basic Spanish online is to start with the fundamental building blocks of the Spanish language and master the art of verbs. Verbs play an important part in any conversation and so are the most important to learn and get right before you start looking at phrases and nouns (because what's the point of learning names for things if you can string them together in a coherent sentence!)

So, let's start with verbs. What is a verb? A verb is a ‘doing’ word and in english this could include words like run, jump, make, destroy, build, buy etc, you get the idea. But Spanish is different from english in the way that verbs are used to form sentences.

Learn basic Spanish Online - Verb Lesson #1

AR verbs are the most common Spanish verb, so these are good ones to start learning. With english, regardless of who is saying it we would use a doing verb such as ‘ran’ in the same way. For examples, I ran over there, you ran over there, he ran over there etc. As you can see, the doing verb remains the same. In Spanish however, the verb changes depending on who is saying it as follows:

To say a doing verb from an “I" perspective, you would remove the ‘a’ and ‘r’ from the verb and add an ‘o’ instead. So, to say “I drink" using the Tomar verb, would become “tomo". To help you learn basic spanish online and to say this from the perspective of “you", it would still be the same but you would add ‘as’ to give ‘tomas’. Similarly, to say it from a “we" perspective, you would just add ‘amos’ to the end, giving ‘tomamos’.

Following these 3 simple principles for Saying, I, we and you should really give you a quick head start at learning the Spanish language and everything else you learn will fall into place around these principles.

Learn basic Spanish Online - Verb Lesson #2

ER verbs are used less often than AR type verbs but are just as important. These verbs work in a similar way, so for example to say “You repair" using the ‘rehacer’ verb, you would drop the ‘er’ and replace it with ‘es’ giving ‘rehaces’. For “we" you just add ‘emos’ to the end and for “I" you just add an ‘o’ to the end giving ‘rehaco’.

Hopefully now you have seen from this free lesson just how easy it is to master Spanish verbs when you learn basic spanish online, you only have to change a couple of letters depending on who it saying the verb, and these are the same across the board for all the verbs, so it shouldn't take you too long to get the hang of them with a bit of practice. Good luck!
