Sports was definitely in Anna's genes with her father, a Greco-Roman wrestling champion and her mother a 400-meter runner. So, it's no wonder that Russian born Anna Kournikova picked up a tennis racquet early in life, in fact at the early age of five years! She already had some very sporting and athletic parents and it was never in doubt that Anna would grow up to be another fine athlete.
Born on June 7, 1981 in Moscow, she made her professional tennis debut at age 14 and that year also ranked the top junior player worldwide. The following year, in 1996, she played in U. S. Open, though Steffi Graff defeated her in Round four.
In 1998, she defeated four top players in the Lipton Championships and the reigning tennis queen, Martina Hingis. That year, she was the first Russian player to be ranked in the U. S Open since 1976. In 1999, when she paired up with Martina Hingis in the Australian Open, she played her first and only Grand Slam.
Anna Kournikova may be known for her prowess in tennis, but few people know that she is interested in reading, swimming, watching TV, listening to music, playing ice-hockey and coaching younger tennis players. And she has an amazing collection of dolls bought from all the countries she visits!!
Anna Kournikova is distinctive also for her sporty figure and charming looks. People magazine named her as one of the world's 50 most beautiful people in 1998. In 2000, she was featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated. Today, she is brand ambassador for prestigious products such as Yonex, Addidas, Berlei sports bra, Lycos and Omega watches.
