In the world's most popular game- soccer defensive skills are vital for the winning prospect of any good side. A team, which has an organised defense, is hard to beat and needs considerable amount of attacking play to be bogged down. There have been several instances in the dynamic history of soccer that teams with some of the best defensive players have excelled and managed to emerge victorious in the world stage.

One of the finest and modern examples of an international team which has proved themselves and won acclaim for their defensive abilities is Italy- the current world champions. Franco Baresi, Paolo Maldini, Bobby Moore and Rio Ferdinand are some of the best defenders of all eras. But what really makes a good defender is a matter of much debate and can be understood by pondering on a few defensive techniques related to soccer.

According to some of the soccer experts from round the globe, it is quite hard to establish oneself as a good defender. When a goal is conceded by any side, the defensive lapse are pointed out and the defenders are thoroughly criticised for their inability to perform. The main objective of a good defender is to either snatch the ball from the attackers feet or just dispossess him by a firm tackle.

There are various methods of defending in soccer and the coaches work very hard with the players during training to get the defensive mechanism organised. The defenders have to help each other out in times of trouble and rescue the side from the embarrassment of conceding a goal. Teamwork is a very essential attribute of defense and the secret behind winning crucial games. But apart from just teamwork, the first requirement of an excellent defender is the ability of judgment.

If the defenders are not good enough on an individual basis, there is a high chance that he will not be considered for selection in a competent side. There are various one on one techniques related to defensive play in soccer and the players are trained accordingly by the coaches. A promising defender always needs to be agile and should stand at a 45-degree angle to move faster.

A straight angular standing stance would make it tough for him to locate the ball. The eyes of the defender should always be focused on the ball wherever it goes and even if it crosses the playing boundary. Alertness, good vision with deft feet movement is a pre- requisite in every way. The defender should not always go very close to the body of the attacker but maintain a distance of 1- 3 yards. The ability to vary the speed limit is also quite essential as sometimes in order to counter a speedy striker, one on one long chases have to be carried out. The sliding tackle should be the last option in this regard if the attacker manages to race away with the ball. Apart from these valuable tips, the most important requirement of a defender is to have a cool temperament. So follow, the mentioned defensive skills in soccer and emerge triumphant when you put on the studs.
