Since its inception in the United Kingdom in 1974, there has been much progress in all aspects of rhythmic gymnastics and in recent years new ideas have developed which have made the sport more interesting, more challenging and more demanding in terms of standards and expectations.
In the fifteen years, as it has become established, the sport has changed dramatically, not just in the United Kingdom but abroad as well. Today's lifestyle is becoming more and more fitness dominated, and a healthy approach to life, is being seen as of vital importance.
With changes in employment trends and the building of sports centers and leisure complexes, an awareness of the advantages and need for leisure activities is ever growing.
Already, children are being encouraged to participate in health related fitness programs, since they are becoming increasingly important in schools today. Along with some of the newer minority sports and activities health related exercises are included in school physical education programs, particularly for children in the 11 to 16 years age range.
Here, too, we are seeing the introduction of rhythmic gymnastics, though this is spreading into primary and middle schools also. There was a time when children instigated their own playtime games in school, and they were great fun.
As youngsters, we could not wait until morning break to get out and play dibs, two balls, hula hoops, salt, mustard, vinegar, pepper, and various other games with hoops, balls, ropes etc.
These were all games involving dexterity, co-ordination and control of small equipment, and though today's free time activities played by children are more sophisticated and mature, the fun and games of some thirty or forty years ago are seemingly coming back, in part, in the form of rhythmic gymnastics.
