Can Australia Win the World Cup?

As I mentioned in my previous article Australian cricket is about to undergo a major change. With the retirements of major players like McGrath and Warne Australian cricket faced a major challenge. Having just won the ashes I asked if Australia had the depth to still stay world champions.

Latest update - Australia has just been humiliated by New Zealand! In the first game of the series of the Chappell - Hadlee trophy Australia has not just lost they were completely thrashed, smashed, pasted, and hammered. It has been 20 years since New Zealand has had a centuary open stand against Australia and in One Day Internationals Australia has NEVER lost by 10 wickets. This has now happened. Admittedly Australia is resting Ponting, Gilchrist and Clarke, Lee and Symonds has injuries but other international teams have also face these problems.

England recently lost their best performing player in the Ashes series - Kevin Pietersen but they still went on to win the tri-series 2-0. It has been a very long time since Australia has seemed so fragile. Although their replacement players have fantastic careers for their home states International Level shows the real champions. Playing in New Zealand on different pitches from what they are used to at home has shown Australia's lack of depth. Both Lee and Symonds are yet to be world cup certainty's and Gilchrist is not at his best form. The question must be asked can Australia win the world cup in the West Indies? This is growing into an ever bigger question mark. Playing on pitches that don't suit in the West Indies will only compound the problem as will hostile crowds.

So should Australia be written off as a no chance. This would be a mistake. True class often reveals itself when back against the wall. They still have the best batsman in the world in Ricky Ponting and great fielders - don't write them off just yet.
