It can be very difficult to buy or sell a home in today's market. Selling a home can almost seem like an exercise in futility considering the fact that there are so many homes on the market. Even though it is a buyers market, it can also be difficult to buy a home because of increased restrictions on lending. One of the best things that you can do in either of these situations is to have a real estate agent in your corner. Not only can they assist you to sell your home faster, they may be able to help you find the perfect home for you and your family. Unfortunately, many people are not aware of how to pick a realtor so that they can experience the most benefits.

One of the first steps of how to pick a realtor would include choosing one that is familiar with the area that you are either moving out of or moving into. This is especially true if you are moving to an area that you are unfamiliar with personally. Too often people choose a realtor simply because they are friends. Unfortunately, if your “friend the realtor" is not familiar with the area it is doing neither one of you any good.

If you are a seller, then you should look carefully at how the realtor is going to list your home and what other type of marketing they are going to do to sell your home. If you think you can do the marketing yourself then you may be able to save quite a bit of money by going with a flat fee listing service. A flat fee listing service will get your home listed in MLS for a one-time flat fee instead of paying a real estate agent a percentage of the sale.

Although there are many factors that will guide you on how to pick a realtor, in the end you need to make sure you choose a realtor that will be on your side, not one who is simply in it to make the sale.
