If your job has relocated you across Canada, and you’re jumping at the chance, well – I’d like to offer you sincere congratulations on having found your dream job. If you’re moving for the sake of moving, congratulations on being a much braver person than I. With those formalities out of the way, let’s talk a little bit about how your move doesn’t have to be as daunting as people will have you believe!
Family of One
So you’re moving by yourself. You are facing the prospect of uprooting your life, and having to leave what may be your hometown, your family, and your circle of friends. Or perhaps that’s the main reason you’re moving – to get away. Either way, as with all of life’s challenges, you must first adjust your headspace. If you are saddened at the prospect of having to move so far away, the moving will become a chore that looms ahead of you and seems so unappealing that you will hardly be able to do it. But, my traveling friend, you are in control of your happiness. You need to start looking at what you’ll gain by moving, not what you’re giving up. This is your chance to write an entirely new chapter in your life. You can be anyone you want to be in your new city. Of course, you will miss your friends and family, but we are blessed with modern technologies like Skype and FaceTime that allow us to see and talk to our loved ones. Just think of the marvelous new life you can create for yourself in your new city, as soon as those Abbotsford moving companies drop you off.
Family With Kids
This is going to be a little bit trickier. If your kids are younger than three or four, you shouldn’t have much trouble. But if your kids are school age, or especially teenagers, they may not take kindly to you “forcing” them to move. Kids love and benefit from their daily routines, and now they will have to leave what they know and make a new home in a completely different place. Be prepared for tears. Talk to your spouse and come up with a game plan. It’s important to be consistent when talking to your kids. As with the Moving for One philosophy above, try to place emphasis on the things that they will be gaining by moving. But please, don’t lie to your kids, and tell them you’re going to a magical place. Be straight up with them and let them know where you’re going.
When you cross the mental hurdles of having to make a long distance move, the rest will take care of itself. No, your boxes won’t pack themselves – but at least while you sweat it out with the grunt work, you’re looking forward to your new life with new possibilities. As the saying goes: keep calm and carry on!
