In Mexico's real estate market, Playa del Carmen beachfront for sale has benefited greatly from the investment all three levels of government have placed in beach and sun focused tourism; one of the most recent examples of this, the beach recovery and widening program in Playa del Carmen's downtown area, has brought further appeal to Playa del Carmen condos for sale.
In mid-February 2011, about a year after the completion of the project, Victor Alcerreca, the head of the Ministry of Infrastructure of Quintana Roo (the state which includes Playa del Carmen and Cancun), reported that monitoring the 5 kilometers (about 3 miles) of widened beaches in Playa del Carmen has indicated the best results.
"The assessment is positive and the results are even better than expected, " said Acerreca. “The beaches are fine, and we have the best beaches in the world, not only because of their width, but also because of the quality of the water. "
The success of the newly widened beaches has not only been a strength in drawing tourists, but also in helping to support and strengthen the value of Playa del Carmen property on the beachfront. The lure of living in a condo overlooking what many consider to be the most beautiful beach in the world, now newly widened, with the unique turquoise water of the Caribbean beyond has been one of the most important factors in the success of the Playa del Carmen real estate market over the past decade.
As for the recovery work itself, it includes a small “cliff" in the sand near the water's edge at certain points, as well as a barrier structure beneath the sand under the water which is expected to protect the new beaches even in the most extreme weather. It is expected that even in the worst case, the beaches would not become smaller than 20 and 30 meters, or about 70 to 100 feet.
In Cancun, the same project restored 11.5 kilometers (7 km) of beaches between Punta Cancun and Punta Nizuc, with similarly positive results.
In mid-March next year a maintenance program for the new beaches will begin. Also this year, there are plans for installing two or three weather stations, two in Cancun and one in Playa del Carmen, with resources about 10 million pesos ($850,000 USD), to be increased in the future. The purpose would be to monitor the effects of certain weather on the beaches.
The total project Beach Environmental Restoration of Quintana Roo, cost of 900 million pesos (about $75 million USD), contributed by all three levels of government. 5.2 to 5.9 million cubic meters of sand.
