Boston is the most expensive city in America, says new report. Housing prices are a major contributing factor. I can confirm this. I've lived in Los Angeles & San Diego for college for a few years, and many Californians believed it is the most expensive there, but trust me - prices in Boston are way more expensive than Southern California. 3 years ago, I lived in a beautiful, modern 2-bedroom apartment in Pacific Beach San Diego, one of the most expensive neighborhoods in San Diego. The rent was $1400. In Boston, $1400 will probably get you an old basement studio filled with rat traps. Many people also believe New York is more expensive than Boston.
Its actually not true. Manhattan certainly has higher rents than Boston, however Manhattan is not a city - it is a burrough of New York. New York City factored as a whole, including all of the burroughs Staten Island, The Bronx, Brooklyn, & Queens - the average price for an apartment comes down a lot compared to Manhattan by itself.
Without a doubt, Boston & NY are the 2 most expensive cities in America (and in my opinion, the 2 best cities on the planet). Most of America is facing a real estate crisis, however prices in Downtown Boston have rose in the last few years. Last year, 2007, was supposed to be one of the slowest real estate markets in American history. Even the luxury real estate market in Boston is booming. Condos over $1,000,000 went up 8% in Downtown Boston last year. Boston is the most expensive city in America, and there are no signs of a slow down anytime soon.
